Family Friendly Restaurants in Birmingham: Why Itihaas is Perfect for the Family

There are many family restaurants Birmingham has to offer, but very few serve the quality Indian food found at Itihaas. With plenty of ways to make an Indian restaurant child-friendly without worsening the menu, children deserve good food just as much as anyone else.

We invite you to bring your children to our Indian family restaurant in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Itihaas: Children’s Menu Options

Find child-friendly choices on all of our menus. Many children enjoy these dishes from our A’la Carte menu because they have boneless meat (tikka), battered fish, crispy pastry or a lighter flavour.

Murgh Tikka (Starter)

Tandoori spiced chicken cooked in a charcoal clay oven.

The chicken is cooked in boneless pieces, so it is easy for children to feed themselves. The flavour may be strong and smokey: cool it down with a spoonful of yoghurt to dip pieces in, or ask for a milder version.

Delhi Paapri Chaat (Starter)

Crispy delicate discs of pastry topped with chickpeas and potatoes, served with sweet yoghurt and tamarind chutney.

This dish is beautifully presented and has plenty of fun textures for children to enjoy. The sweet yoghurt and fruity chutney promise something to enjoy.

Makhani Paneer (Vegetarian Main Course)

Chunks of Indian cottage cheese drowned in a rich tangy sauce. (Contains Nuts).

Flavoured with cardamom, fresh cream and yoghurt with a subtle hint of chilli, this house favourite is recognised as true Maharaja cuisine. It is creamy and smooth, with plenty of dairy to cool down any chilli.

Makhani Dhal (Vegetarian Main Course)

Mixed lentils in a creamy rich gravy with ginger garlic and creamed tomatoes.

Slightly spiced to tantalise, this dhal is mild enough for most young palates that walk through our doors.

Methi Aloo Gobi (Vegan Main Course)

Baby potatoes cooked with cauliflower florets in a light fenugreek marination.

A lightly flavoured, creamy potato and cauliflower dish, aloo gobi is a firm favourite for all ages.

You can always please children with dessert, and our selection is true to our North Indian cuisine: sweet, syrupy and delicious!

  • Mango, Almond and Pistachio Kulfi (Indian Ice Cream)
  • Gulab Jamun: syrup-soaked dough balls
  • Gajar Halwa Tart: shortcrust pastry filled with sweetened carrot filling. With almond kulfi, berry compote and toasted pistachio
  • Saffron and Pistachio Rasmali: a creamed sponge pudding with a rich milky sauce
  • Vegan Apple Jalebi with Coconut Ice Cream: crispy apple fritters dipped in golden syrup.

Families enjoy meals at Itihaas Indian restaurant because we are happy to adjust recipes for milder tastes. Not every child is happy to eat spicy food or complex flavours. While we are proud of the rich flavour profiles of our dishes, there is no reason for children to go hungry in our restaurant.
Our chefs are happy to make a milder version of some dishes for children to enjoy, so just ask our servers when ordering.

We are also happy to cater for special dietary needs, please let our servers know when you are seated. Itihaas serves Halal food.

Sharing is Caring

While we have sharing platters on our A’la Carte menu, families may also enjoy our thali dining experience. Our Thali children’s menu (Chote Nawab) includes vegetable noodles, salted fries, chicken tikka, fish goujons and coconut kheer for dessert.

With thali, everything is served on one large platter, so your kids can try all the dishes on theirs and yours until they find something they like. On this menu, there are free refills of any dish for the duration of your meal.
