Eating Vegetarian at Itihaas
While not a totally pure Indian vegetarian restaurant in Birmingham, Itihaas chefs take vegetarianism and veganism seriously. Many of our friends and colleagues are vegetarian, and we know how frustrated they get when the only thing for them to eat is mushroom risotto. That’s the benefit of a traditional Indian restaurant: vegetarians are not an afterthought.
Our menu has many options for vegetarians, always prepared separately to avoid contamination. This blog describes a few of our Indian vegetarian restaurant dishes; we want all our guests to feel welcome.
Vegetarian Starters
Soy Shashlik Tikka
Soya cubes marinated in Tandoori spice flavours with roasted onions, tomatoes and peppers.
Vegan Chilli Mushrooms
Tempura-battered white bottom mushrooms, stir-fried with spring onion, mixed peppers, chilli and garlic, tossed together in a dark soy sauce. Indo-Chinese fusion.
Hakka Mock Chicken
Seared soya chunks marinated in dark soya and chilli coriander sauce, cooked in a traditional Chinese Wok over an intense flame and garnished with chopped spring onion and fried cashew nuts.
Garden Sharing Platter
A large sharing plate for two, the garden platter has a range of vegetarian dishes in one: Haryali Paneer Tikka, Kasta Samosa, Dhai Puri, Tandoori Soya Tikka, Aloo Tikki Channa and Chilli Garlic Mushrooms.
Main Courses
Head to our Sabzian section of the menu for our meat-free Indian main courses. Here are just a few of our favourites.
Makhani Paneer
This house favourite has cubed paneer (Indian cottage cheese) drowned in a rich tangy sauce. The sauce is flavoured with cardamom, fresh cream and yoghurt, with a subtle hint of chilli. Makhani Paneer is recognised as true Maharaja cuisine.
Shai Palak Paneer
Cubed paneer cooked in a creamed spinach puree in an onion & tomato lipta masala infused with ginger & garlic.
Vegetable Biryani
A classic: mixed vegetables with basmati rice seasoned with saffron and herbs, served with an onion and tomato raita and traditional Biryani gravy.
Vegan Choices
Veganism is common in India, and our menu is not short of options. Chickpeas, tofu and lentils are excellent sources of protein.
- Dhaba Channa Masala
Roasted chickpeas slow-cooked in thick Masala gravy with cumin, ground turmeric and fresh coriander, garnished with pomegranate. - Tadka Dhal
Tempered lentils garnished with fresh garlic and brown onions, cooked in a thick soup, a light alternative as a main course. - Tawa Sabzi
A melody of freshly chopped seasonal vegetables cooked in a dry curry paste on an iron hot plate. - Vegan Tofu Curry
Cooked in a thick and fiery coconut and mustard paste curry. - Methi Aloo Gobi
Baby potatoes cooked with cauliflower florets in a light fenugreek marination. A simple dish that feeds the soul.
