Birmingham: Christmas Dinner at an Indian Restaurant?

Don’t expect turkey and Brussels sprouts on our menu: we’re here for flavour!

Curry at Christmas is a great idea: a meal packed with aromatic spices and a selection of tandoori-cooked naans, with sweet Gulab Jamoon for dessert. What could be better?

Christmas in India

Compared to other holidays celebrated across the Indian sub-continent, Christmas is a relatively small celebration. Christianity is the third-largest religion in India, and Indian Christmas traditions are sometimes similar to those in the UK. For example, churches decorate with poinsettia flowers and candles. Midnight mass is considered very important, particularly in Goa. A feast is served directly after the mass, with curries and delicious creamy kheer for dessert.

With a vastly different climate, the Indian Christmas has a different flavour to the UK’s. There are no pine trees, for instance. Instead, people might decorate a mango tree, a sacred tree. Many Indian Christians hang paper star lanterns between buildings at Christmas, lighting up the whole street.
